It pulls Google Docs functionality into Office, letting you save, manage and browse your Google Docs as if they were in a directory on your hard drive. You can also share docs and add collaborators, and send email and notifications, all while you're writing up that next draft in Word. The first version of OffiSync is apparently close to launching, and you can sign up for the beta right now. It's initially going to roll for Windows XP (SP2), Vista and Windows 7, but a version for Office Mac is also in the works. The idea is pretty interesting, and it looks like OffiSync could be an extremely useful product if it ends up working as advertised.

A diner at an upstate New York restaurant got a little something extra with his broccoli -- a severed snake head, reports CBS station WCBS-TV.
Jack Pendleton was at T.G.I. Friday's in Clifton Park on Sunday when he spotted something gray mixed in with his vegetables and realized it was a snake head the size of his thumb, with part of the spine still attached.
Pendleton says he snapped a photo with his cell phone camera and called the waiter over. The manager said he'd never seen anything like it.
A spokeswoman for the Carrollton, Texas, chain says it's investigating. The broccoli was pulled from the restaurant and others served by the same supplier. It wasn't immediately known what type of snake was involved.
Pendleton and his girlfriend weren't charged for their meals. He says he has no plans to sue.
Clifton Park is a town in Saratoga County, New York.

Hackers Learn to Download Netflix Movies

Earlier this year Netflix announced a new service that lets you watch a limited number of videos online instead of waiting for the DVDs to come in the mail.

There's just one problem. You have to watch on Netflix's terms. The video player is browser based, and the movies are wrapped up in Windows Media DRM. If you want to want to copy a movie to a portable device for viewing on the go, you're out of luck.

Well, the smart folks over at the Rorta forums seem to have cracked the code, using Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player 11, FairUse4WM, and Notepad. The solution involves finding the URL of the video file, downloading it, acquiring the license key and then stripping the DRM. It's a bit involved, and will probably take longer than just sitting down and watching the movie. But hey, it's the principle of the thing, right?

A 59-year-old German woman has had most of a pencil removed from inside her head after suffering nearly her whole life with the headaches and nosebleeds it caused, Bild newspaper reported.

Margret Wegner fell over carrying the pencil in her hand when she was age 4, according to a report on News.com.au.

"The pencil went right through my skin – and disappeared into my head," Wegner told the newspaper.

It narrowly missed vital parts of her brain.

At the time no one dared operate, but now technology has improved sufficiently for doctors to be able to remove it.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Imagine the ringing noise of 32,000 quarters hitting the pavement.

An armoured car company reported losing $8,000 in quarters along highways in two Wisconsin counties last month. About half has been returned. "I guess somebody found that and figured it was an early Christmas," Jefferson County Detective Sgt. Lawrence Lee said.

Eight-hundred dollars of loose quarters was found late last month in the Madison area and $3,200 in Jefferson County the next day.

Loomis Fargo officials told authorities that a truck headed for Madison carrying boxes of quarters broke down in the Pewaukee area, so they sent another one. The load was transferred, but someone forgot to secure the door.

The driver was issued a citation for failure to prevent a leaking load.

A Loomis official declined comment Thursday.

Like most online mapping services, Google Maps calculates estimated travel times based on speed limits, not on actual road conditions. And if you live in a busy metropolitan area like Los Angeles, San Francisco, or New York, you know that you have to more than double the times Google Maps spits out.

Well, a few months ago Google added traffic updates to its maps. And now it looks like the company's done something useful with that information and added a second estimate for driving time to your directions. Type in any two addresses (in limited metropolitan areas at the moment) and Google will tell you how long it should take to get there under ideal conditions, and during rush hour. Of course, there's no way to account for traffic accidents.

We love us some eMusic. The legal download service eschews DRM and still sells tracks for far less than any other popular service. So, it's come as a shock to us that eMusic is teaming with stodgy AT&T to sell music downloads to phones -- except the iPhone, no joy in Mudville for iPhone users. Music downloads will cost $7.49 per five songs, five times more than music costs when using eMusic's online subscription service and your portable music player.

Is convenience really worth 5 times the per song price? We don't think so. AT&T is pretty late to the music download to mobile game, and we applaud their choice of eMusic as a partner but, please, don't rip us off.

In a zoo in California , a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veter inarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only orphans" that could be found quickly, were a litter of weaner pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger

Verizon to buy Rural Cellular for $2.67 Billion

Another one bites the dust, so to speak. This time around, we've got Verizon Wireless doing the acquiring, as it has just announced plans to pay $2.67 billion for "one of the nation's largest rural carriers," Rural Cellular. The news comes just over a month after AT&T handed over a staggering amount of its own to pick up Dobson Communications, and this agreement will expand the carrier's coverage "in parts of the East Coast and the South, as well as in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Idaho, Washington and Oregon." Verizon did note that it planned on deploying CDMA service in Rural Cellular's existing GSM markets in order to convert customers over, but it also mentioned that the existing GSM networks would remain to "serve the roaming needs of other GSM carrier's customers." Look for the deal to be finalized sometime during the first half of next year, and don't be surprised if we see a few more consolidation efforts go down in the meantime.

July 26, 2007 — Alexander the Great founded Alexandria to immortalize his name on his way to conquer the world, but his may not have been the first city on the famed site on Egypt's Mediterranean coast. A Smithsonian team has now uncovered first underwater evidence pointing to an urban settlement dating back seven centuries before Alexander showed up in 331 B.C.

The city he founded, Alexandria, has long been a source of intrigue and wonder, renowned for its library, once the largest in the world, and the 396-foot lighthouse at the island of Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. But little was known about the site in pre-Alexander times, other than that a fishing village by the name of Rhakotis was located there.

Coastal geoarchaeologist Jean-Daniel Stanley of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History said the work by him and his colleagues suggested there had been a much larger community than had previously been believed.

While celebrating the 20th anniversary of Metal Gear in Japan today, the company announced a handful of goodies coming our way -- and one of those Snake-filled gifts is Metal Gear on a cell phone near you.

Metal Gear Solid Mobile will be set in the Metal Gear Solid 3 world and be a fully 3D experience. The title will be available through EZweb and will be included on a particular Sony Ericson model as a default application.

First iPhone remote exploit revealed

In the first true hack of this summer's hottest item, white hat researchers today revealed the Apple iPhone is susceptible to a remote exploit that can give attackers complete control over the device.

A team of consultants at Baltimore-based Independent Security Evaluators today released general details about a buffer overflow vulnerability that could permit malware writers to inject malicious code to steal personal information from a user’s phone, one of the researchers, Jake Honoroff, told SCMagazine.com today. The attack also could be tweaked to drop other malware, for example, a keylogger.

Attackers would attempt to get victims to visit a specially crafted malicious website either through an email link or by controlling a wireless access point, Honoroff, who worked with researchers for 10 days to discover the flaw, said.

For those of us who travel with our laptops we must be aware that rogue sites are being setup near major airports trying to steal information off of your laptop and cell phone systems. I was surprised to learn that the BBB conducted a audit at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, and found 20 rogue sites setup to steal travelers information.

TheBostonChannel.com article states:

“Most of these networks are not encrypted, don’t have any special security built into them; everything they’re typing into their laptop — passwords, user names — is in the air,” said Michael Maggio, chief executive officer of Newbury Networks.

Thursday, the Better Business Bureau in Eastern Massachusetts issued an alert. It warned travelers who use laptop computers that hackers have been setting up in and around airports fake Wi-Fi networks designed to steal personal files and information.

Todd Haselton at Ars Technica's 1 Microsoft Way journal is reporting that the majority of Support.com's customers are confused by some of Vista's significant new changes. After opening their doors for service in June, a tally of that month's support calls revealed that a whopping 77 percent were to get help with Vista, with a surprising 30 percent of those calls simply asking for help on how to navigate Vista's controversial new Aero interface.

living with their boyfriends, one out of four responded, "I won't." And
it seems a man's earning power may affect a woman's decision to
wed.

Sociologists Pamela Smock, of the University of Michigan,

socioeconomic status is a key factor in a cohabitating woman's

A baby boy in Poland was born drunk.

Doctors decided to check his blood-alcohol level because his mother was drunk when she arrived to give birth.

What they saw frightened them.

A doctor tells the PAP news agency that 12 hours after he was born, the boy had a blood-alcohol level six times the legal limit for driving. That means he was drunk before he was even born. He weighed five pounds, seven ounces at birth.

Doctors say the baby will likely suffer permanent neurological damage from his mother's drinking.
